Picking a site

Ok so we have generated a new world “The legendary universe” in this case.  Now we need to pick a site for our band of 7 dwarves to start building a new home.  We should now have a new option at the title screen.  “Start Playing”

Title screen now showing the "Start Playing" option

I select start playing followed by Dwarf Fortress mode.

Next we start looking for an ideal (or not ideal if you want a challenge) location for our fortress.  Ideally I want lots of wood available (trees).  An average temperate.  Too cold and all the lakes will freeze during winter.  Too warm and they will dry up during summer.  Although there are ways round for this game I would like a reasonably easy fortress to play.

Choose Fortress Location

This seems like a nice place.  The three windows show where you are planning to embark each at different zoom levels (local region and world).  This spot seems great although maybe a little warm.  We have soil and fluxstone (for making steel), plenty of trees in woodland and we are surrounded my wilderness.  I don’t fancy emabarking in somewhere haunted :S.  I press e for embark and our dwarves make there journey to the “The silken hills”.

Arrival

I chose a location where the ground is very flat for this fortress, you can embark on a mountain if you wish.  Dwarf Fortress is a 3 dimensional world, that world is cut into sheets for you to view on your screen, the sheets are called z-levels.  The level is shown in bottom left of the screen, hence this is z-level 143 as we build the fortress will dig deep into the earth many z-levels below the surface.

Here are our dwarves alongside there caravan.  The area consists of several lakes which are great for water and for creating mud for our first farm.

Arrival at the site for our new fortress

Thats it for now! We have embarked on our fortress location.

World Generation

Ok, so you have decided to follow a game of Dwarf Fortress.  Well probably the best place to start is the title screen.

Title Screen

The Dwarf Fortress Title Screen

Lets start with “Create New World!

Next we are shown the Create a World screen, here we can set some parameters.  The length of History, how many Civilizations or beasts we would like.  You can also set the size of your world.  TIP:  Smaller worlds seem better with older hardware.

Create a World

I hit “y” and our world generation starts.  This is vastly complex, my PC is really working overtime here.  With world generation.  Below you can see the world being formed. “The Legendary Universe”

Creating New World - "The Legendary Universe"

After my poor PC has spent about 10 minuites running 250 years of Historical events (which include 15000 dead and 110000 historical events) I press p for a image of my world then enter to Accept out new world.

"The Legendary Universe" has been created.

Our world is saved and we are returned to the title screen.  :)

The exported world below, yes it is a wonderful process!

The Legendary Universe

A game of Dwarf Fortress

This is the start of a hopefully a great blog following a world of Dwarf Fortress.  Dwarf Fortress is a game like no other.

The game starts by generating a random world.  This world can contain countless features.  Mountains deserts, Icecaps and haunted locations to name but a few.  This game then runs through some history of civilization.  You can let this run for as many years as you desire.  Civilizations will appear and disappear.  Dragons and other beats will roam the land, terrorize the locals only to be hunted down and killed by great warriors hundreds of years later.

Once we have a generated world.  There are two game modes to choose from.  Dwarf Fortress and adventurer.  We are for now at least going to play Dwarf Fortress mode.  We shall pick a site in our new unique world for our band of 7 dwarfs to create there new fortress.  Will it thrive and become a huge successful settlement, or will it perish to a band of goblins or some hideous mutant creature.  Only playing can tell.  This is Dwarf Fortress and remember – “Losing is Fun!
